Respect and dignity

Posted on 9 May 2011 in Kevin's Blog

The Hardest Hit campaign will culminate in a day of action on Wednesday 11 May 2011 with a march, lobby of Parliament and rally. Thousands of disabled people, as well as family and friends, will be marching to express solidarity and anger at the cuts threatening our benefits, services, jobs and rights. With 66% of blind and partially sighted people of working age currently unemployed, we will have a large presence. Hopefully the march will be peaceful, and in our dealings with politicians we must ensure that we uphold our respect and dignity.

Moving off incapacity benefits - the Burnley pilot

Posted on 13 December 2010 in Kevin's Blog

As the Welfare Rights Officer for Action for Blind People North West Region I am braced for a major benefit change that will eventually affect everyone who is claiming working age incapacity benefits. For some people in Burnley and Aberdeen the change has come sooner rather than later.

Much more than a pet

I have a great love for dogs. The other week I travelled to the Emirates Stadium to watch Burnley play Arsenal. As I got off the coach I was welcomed by two brown and white spaniel dogs with tails that wagged their bodies. My first reaction was to stroke them, but then I realised that these dogs were happy because they were working. It got me thinking about the wonderful contribution that dogs make to improve our way of life.

The Conquering Hero

When I was at junior school my dad gave me a shilling to open a Yorkshire Bank account. He gave my sister one as well in the hope that we would become savers. Each week my sister added to it from her pocket money. On leaving junior school at eleven her shilling had grown to the princessly sum of two pounds ten and sixpence. Mine was still a shilling. My dad rued, 'the trouble with you lad is money burns holes in your pockets'. I’ve not changed. This year I got my local government lump sum pension in my pockets, so now I’m blowing it on a trip to Antarctica.

Dare to Dream

Dare to dream and your dreams will come true. Burnley FC dared to dream of being a Premier League team. The beautiful thing about dreams is that we all can have them. You don’t need to have been born with a silver spoon in your mouth.

In praise of ‘The Three Poddies’

Posted on 15 May 2009 in Kevin's Blog

Help! Au Secours! I'm drowning in a sea of casework. I know Action for Blind People have a 'no blame' culture, but I blame the excellent work being done by 'The Three Poddies' for my dilemma. I'll explain.

True heroes

Let’s have a break from Welfare Rights. Not many people know this, but outside of Action for Blind People I lead a very emotional life. No, it’s true. You see I am a dedicated foot soldier in Owen Coyle’s Claret and Blue Army. I wear my Burnley Football Supporters Club badge with pride.

Towneley Hall Sculpture Trail

Towneley Hall is an impressive stately home housing a museum and art gallery set in its own grounds within the Borough of Burnley. If you are ever passing it is well worth a visit.
