A case of severe red-eye
What better way to end the school year (for those of you who have forgotten or just don’t know who I am, I’m a teacher) than with an eye operation: an enucleation.
The thread goes that for the last fifteen years my right eye’s been blind and in the last eight or so of these, it’s simply not been behaving itself much at all. Rather like an unruly pupil it has intermittently promised better comportment, only to revert to type once you’ve turned your back and are busy with the rest of the class. Whether it be a holiday, a new job or any other weighty change in my life, the eye that wouldn’t die flares up a storm of irritation, inflammation and unchecked tears to distract me to the tenth degree.
Such a description makes the decision to ‘enucleate’ or remove the eye seem much more clear-cut than the years of inner-wrangling actually bear witness. It’s not easy to say goodbye to a body part, no matter how offending said part actually is. But it’s done now and although it’s a bit too early to say, "Wow! What a difference!" I am looking forward to how it settles down.
What it’s not too early to say is, "Cor, how very, very odd." The eye is completely red, literally, which isn’t at all surprising once you are made aware that the prosthesis, or artificial shell that is painted to look like an eye, hasn’t been fitted yet. It would be easy to cast a discontented judgement too early when going through any sort of treatment, but you’ve got to remember that the body takes its time and parts of it may look very odd for a while. But one thing I can say with certainty, is that I am going to get some animated reactions whenever I take my shades off in the next few weeks!
