My love affair with Siri: is the honeymoon over?

Posted on 15 November 2011 in Sandi's Blog

Ever since I purchased my iPhone 4S a few weeks ago, I have been evaluating my use of Siri: in doing so I have come to a few realisations about how I use technology in general. The one theme that prevails is that nothing is infallible. No technology is perfect and, as an end user, I find that I am forever making adjustments and adaptations, and that isn't such a bad thing.

Blind Memory: Simon Says everyone play!

A few months ago, I got an email from Ciro Alves Anunciação Oliveira, a Brazilian iPhone App developer, asking for my feedback on a game he had created for blind people. As I am now cultivating a healthy amount of skepticism, it took a few emails for me to be sure I was not being sold swampland in Florida. Far from it. Ciro possesses quite a delightful sense of wonderment: he had no experience of people with visual impairments until he saw a group of blind folk, all holding popcorn. He made a comment to the friend he was with about how unusual it was that they all had popcorn. His friend just laughed, as it was clear to him that they had just been to a movie.

A visually impaired geek finds happiness with a small but perfectly formed Mac Mini

Although I purchased my beloved Mac Mini on the same day I got my iPhone back in June, I wanted to wait a while to have the experience of using it day in and day out, as I anticipated there was going to be an adjustment period since I did port over from a PC running the dreaded Vista after all. It is not like me to wholeheartedly diss something outright, but really, it is just not right when you have regular freezes and crashes because of conflicts between your operating system and software when they are made by the same company!

Why the iPhone 3GS made this visually impaired girl happy

I was in geek heaven when I found out that Apple were bringing out an accessible iPhone with plenty of features for visually impaired users. And calling it an iPhone is a bit of a misnomer, but I guess they couldn’t really call it the iPhone-iPod-iEmail-iInternet-iCamera-iEtc now could they?
