Fashion Senses

Wow, our first fashion and design workshop was so much fun!

Bradbury Oak resident, Hayley, at the workshop

Interactive workshop

We decided to hold it at Action’s supported housing unit, Bradbury Oak, and the tenants jumped at the chance to come along. The workshop was super interactive with lots of design and discussion.  All of the participants were given a range of textured materials to work with and designed their own perfect fabric and as well as customising their own clothing.

Shinsuke Nakano

The workshop is part of our Fashion Senses project where we are working with designer Shinsuke Nakano to explore the non visual aspects of garment design. The workshop was the first in a series of five, however if the feedback we got from the last is anything to go by, we just might do a few more! On the day, we talked about garment functionality. The participants made it very clear that they felt that the fashion industry, including manufacturers, retailers and designers, do not think enough about the functionality and labelling (accessibility) of clothing. This includes tricky zips and fastenings, arm and neck holes, shoe fastenings, branding on t-shirts and print size on labels.

Onwards and upwards

For workshop number two we want to explore areas of improvement, we hope to come up with some simple ideas on how our clothes can be improved.  What is certain, is that our exhibition and fashion show next year will be an opportunity for the fashion industry to gain some feedback from their visually impaired customers, on what they think of their clothing and what changes could be made.
