Freezing! Bothered?
It’s a long time since we had such an extended winter. Like many people, I rely on reduced energy usage in summer to cover the cost of the following winter, but the minute I switch off the central heating the weather reverts back to freezing. Am I bothered?
For the poorest older pensioners the cost of fuel can be extremely bothering. Fortunately, there will be a further £80 help for some from the government’s (don’t ask me which one) Energy Rebate Scheme.
You may be one of the ‘some’ if, on 26 March 2010, all of the following applied to you or your partner:
- you were aged 70 or over
- you were getting the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit but not the savings credit
- you were responsible for the electricity bill where you live and were not already on a discounted tariff
In modern day speak, 'partner' means someone in a couple, who are married, civil partners or living together as if they were married or civil partners. Well there you are!
I have it on good authority that you do not need to have a surviving parent to get this rebate. So, if this is you, you should get a letter between the beginning of June and the end of July letting you know how it will be paid.
If this is you and you don’t get a letter, call the Energy Rebate Scheme helpline on 0845 600 0033. Lines are open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday.
Unfortunately it’s not me - Am I bothered? Do I look bothered? Face! Freezing! Bothered?
