Fit notes are a coming

From 6 April 2010 it is almost certain that the 'sick note' will be replaced by a new 'Statement of Fitness for Work'. What will this look like and what help is available?

Unless your GP considers you fit for work he will issue you with the new 'Statement of Fitness for Work' on which he will write either 'not fit for work' or 'may be fit for work'.

'May be fit for work' should mean that in your GP’s opinion you could return to work provided you have the support to overcome the difficulties posed by your illness or impairment. Hopefully your GP will be able to give general information about how your illness or impairment may affect your ability to work.

I have a problem with this. Welfare rights experience has taught me that many GPs know a lot about medical conditions but less when it comes to how they affect an individual's ability to cope with work or home situations. Fortunately most GPs are on the patient's side. It is therefore likely that many GPs will listen if you say you do not feel fit for work. Tell your GP if you have or will have difficulties coping with situations at work and say what help you will need - if you know.

Therein lies the next problem - many people and employers don't know what support is needed in the workplace to enable an employee to continue working when they become ill or develop a condition such as sight loss. The NHS suggests that you be open with your employer about what you can and can't do. I agree, providing you have an understanding employer. Even then they may be unaware of the available options to enable employment to continue.

So, if things go to plan, we are only a few weeks off the new 'Statement of Fitness for Work' certificates coming in. Action for Blind People is able to offer advice and support to anyone struggling at work due to sight problems. If you need help you can contact us through the RNIB Helpline on 0303 123 9999.
