Getting my sight reassessed

Posted in Guest's blog on 16 December 2010 | 2 Comments

Just thought I'd let you know how I'm getting on as things have moved on a little since I last blogged about still waiting for the call about the DLA.

I went to Moorfields Eye Hospital last week to get my sight assessed again in preparation for the forms being sent to me. After a morning of questions, eye drops and flashing lights in my eyes, I'm now told that my sight has deteriorated since I was originally registered 13 years ago. My diagnosis now puts me within the qualifying criteria for the upgraded benefit.

I spoke to a lovely lady in the registration office at the hospital who is sorting out my new registration form. She told me that they are snowed under with people asking for copies of their Certificate of Visual Impairment or a reassessment. This is excellent news and I'm glad people are getting ready. She told me though that a lot of local authorities and GPs are not aware of the change and the need for people to have up to date information, and so are not referring people for the test.

Remember, this is your right. You are entitled to have this information, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

In some ways I suppose I am pleased that I should now qualify for the benefit. It will make a difference to my life. It is however cold comfort, as it also marks very starkly the fact that I have lost more of my sight. I'd far rather be able to see better than claim the benefit.

Hope you are all making progress. Let me know how you're getting on!

Dave

  • I was registered in 1984 but spent a month trying to track my CVI and was told that they moved offices many times since then and records have been lost. Anyway I sent in a letter from my eye surgeon stating my sight and am hoping this is enough
