Disability and Eugenic Abortion: What is the value of a human life?

Posted on 31 May 2011 in Sandi's Blog

In our house, we have a regular Sunday routine: we heckle the TV whilst watching the weekly social, political and moral issues being debated on The Big Questions. There is always a discussion in our living room that follows, the length of which is determined by just how irked I get by one opinion or the other. But last Sunday was very different.

Make-up safety - you’ve been warned!

Posted on 26 May 2011 in Kiesha's Blog

My first experiences of make-up involved a number of hand-me-down or rather cast-off beauty products, found in the bottom of my mum’s old bags, my gran’s old cupboards and my aunt’s extremely organised beauty cases.

Blind Memory: Simon Says everyone play!

A few months ago, I got an email from Ciro Alves Anunciação Oliveira, a Brazilian iPhone App developer, asking for my feedback on a game he had created for blind people. As I am now cultivating a healthy amount of skepticism, it took a few emails for me to be sure I was not being sold swampland in Florida. Far from it. Ciro possesses quite a delightful sense of wonderment: he had no experience of people with visual impairments until he saw a group of blind folk, all holding popcorn. He made a comment to the friend he was with about how unusual it was that they all had popcorn. His friend just laughed, as it was clear to him that they had just been to a movie.

Too close for comfort?

I don’t profess to be an expert when it comes to male grooming! But what I can say is that as a woman, there is nothing quite as charming as a well-groomed, freshly shaven man. I have known men who have learnt how to shave from their fathers, some from siblings and some from their friends, but what is apparent is that once you have learnt the basics - it becomes second nature.

Is the upcoming UK cookie legislation half baked?

When I read the ICO Guidance on the impending cookie legislation, published last week, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Are values valued?

A lot of folk would describe me as being headstrong and opinionated. A lot of other folk would use more colourful language. I am well aware that I can be like a dog with a bone: if I believe in something really strongly, I suddenly find myself in possession of a bucketload of passion and bags of resolve that get me quite a long way. I am also aware that my overwhelming desire for the world to be a better place challenges people to change, and this makes me unpopular.

Respect and dignity

The Hardest Hit campaign will culminate in a day of action on Wednesday 11 May 2011 with a march, lobby of Parliament and rally. Thousands of disabled people, as well as family and friends, will be marching to express solidarity and anger at the cuts threatening our benefits, services, jobs and rights. With 66% of blind and partially sighted people of working age currently unemployed, we will have a large presence. Hopefully the march will be peaceful, and in our dealings with politicians we must ensure that we uphold our respect and dignity.

Learning to go blind: degenerative sight loss, milestones & suchlike

Posted on 3 May 2011 in Sandi's Blog

I've been wondering for some time whether it's harder to have been born blind or to be gradually losing your eyesight like me. So, I took a bit of a straw poll and got some surprising results.
