What’s in store?
An ode to shopping: “I hear the voices calling me... ’Come to me,’ they sing chanting mesmerising lullabies that court me into a bubbly trance. Wallet eager to open, money ready to flee... My eyes linger in exalted admiration among the racks.” Unknown.
Gratitude in a bubble: why I seldom feel disabled
I have been making a concerted effort to take things in my stride of late and, on the surface, it all seems to be going great guns, but it would seem that there are certain not so pleasant things in this life that are just unavoidable.
Hair today
When it comes to your hair, knowing how to communicate well with your hairdresser is all important, especially if you are blind or partially sighted.
Is Apple accessibility the best kept secret?
There is no question that Apple products are an integral part of my daily life and I shudder to think what I would do without them. But, and it's a big but, I am downright furious with Apple Inc. Why? Because, despite being lobbied a gazillion times by as many people, they fail to recognise or understand the importance of engaging with disabled people.
About face
When it comes to the magic that is make-up, it really is amazing what you can achieve with the right products and the right technique. After all, where would Marilyn Monroe have been without her signature beauty spot, or Sophia Loren without her winged eyeliner and would we have been so taken with Judy Garland’s perfect pout if she had not found ‘her’ shade of red lipstick?
Disability awareness meet ignorance and stereotypes
I have been doing some observing of late, trying to understand what it is about disabled people that make some folk treat us like we are aliens. The old excuse of a previous altercation with an "angry disabled person" is a bit long in the tooth, but I do suspect that this stereotype is alive and well.
Registering blind - three years on
Last Friday was my anniversary. No, not my wedding anniversary. Three years ago, on April 1st, I registered blind. I remember it like it was yesterday, and as I now sit and reflect, I do so with mixed feelings. I remember the shock, the pain and the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. I remember the rapid decent into an emotional and psychological black hole, trying to grasp what had transpired and feeling the most debilitating sense of loss. I thought that my life as I knew it was over, and I was right.
Fashion forecast
Oh the fickle world of fashion. Once again the season is changing and with it the trends. Have you been keeping up?
