Let’s celebrate but not get carried away

Posted on 24 April 2009 in Kevin's Blog

In my blog entitled 'It made a difference' I talked about how standing up for one's rights, such as being given the opportunity to claim the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance, can make a difference to the lives of thousands of others. On 17 March 2009 the government agreed to change the law on this. Everyone who was in anyway involved in the RNIB 'Taken for a Ride Campaign' has made a difference, but whilst it is a major advance in benefits provision for people with sight loss, it's important not to get carried away when viewing its implications.

There is a lovely Quaker poster which shows two donkeys attached to each other by a length of rope. They are tugging frantically in opposite directions each to reach their own pile of hay in opposite corners. Unfortunately the rope is taught and is not long enough, so neither can get to their hay. Frustrated, exhausted and losing hope they have an idea. Together, they walk to one pile and eat it then they walk across to the other.

In a recent blog entitled 'Don’t get fleeced' I warned of a company website www.benefitshelpline.com. My thanks go to 'polybore' for informing me that the phone tariff information on this website is concealed from anyone using a screen reader.
