The Great Debate - txt spk

Posted in Charlie 's blog on 22 May 2012 | 4 Comments

Here is an example of a conversation in 'text speak'; "OMG, I'm way jel of u as ur txt speak is way better than mine nd it's just not kl to talk proper coz they think they way gd nd kl!"

In 'proper language' that'd translate to:

"Oh My God, I am very jealous of you as your text speak is much better than mine and it is just not cool to speak properly because they think that they are very good and cool!"

It seems that young people and adults use less punctuation whilst using 'text speak'.

We hope that text speak is becoming more uncommon, however it is still ok to use a little bit occasionally in a rushed situation. But in the long-term studies have shown that it will lead to a decrease in GCSE English Language and Literature levels if this continues. It is also quite annoying for screen readers.

But what do you think?

  • I hope you are right, charlie!
I am expecting, any day now To hear that people are writing novels with smiley faces and frowny faces in them. Because it's so much easier than trying to put your feelings into words.
I enjoyed your article very much!

  • Hi Charlie, the art of writing with a pen will soon be going out of fashion anyway. Everyone types and texts these days. Hope you're okay.

  • I agree with you Charlie. I just hope people don't start speaking that way as well! By the way my son has retinopathy of prematurity aswell. James is 9 years old. I really enjoyed your article. I'm looking forward to the next one.
