Valerie's story
Valerie contacted Action last year after she was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration and her confidence was seriously affected.
"I was devastated, I kept believing this was just a temporary thing. I woke up one morning and my sight was almost gone, I thought it would come back just as quickly. It took many, many months before I was informed there was no other treatment for me. My sight would never return and may even get worse.
"It really affected my confidence. I was unable to see myself or others clearly anymore. It is hard to walk down a street without staring at people trying hard to focus and I was very reluctant to venture out. I could not put on make up, or do my hair, and completely lost interest in my appearance. I felt suicidal.
"One day I took a stroll to my local charity shop and just by chance I was told about Action. I contacted them and spoke to Wayne, the Cumbria Action Team Coordinator. He basically saved my life, by offering me opportunities and roads towards the support I now rely upon.
"When I lost my sight I was working and thought I would have to give up my job but Wayne put me in touch with the local Jobcentre. I joined the Access to Work scheme where I received support which enabled me to stay employed. The various aids I use now such as the computer and magnifiers are vital to my everyday work.
"Wayne contacted Social Services for me and they have been supporting me with safety issues in the home and audio books. Wayne also helped me complete various benefit forms and I am delighted to say, I am now receiving financial help - making my life even better.
"Action has helped my confidence enormously. I am amazed by the hard work and dedication from the Action team. I have mentioned Action for Blind People to many who ask for advice on visual impairment. It was by chance that I came across Action for Blind People, but I am very lucky I did. I have been aware of some people suffering from the same condition, who have become depressed and refuse to leave their home or even seek advice or help. Thanks Action."
