Reuben's Story
Living on a remote farm away from transport links, it was clear that 56 year old Reuben needed our support for more than just employment issues.
Living on a remote farm away from transport links, it was clear that 56 year old Reuben needed our support for more than just employment issues.
Reuben is registered blind and working as a self-employed agricultural labourer. Following a referral by his Disability Employment Adviser we arranged for our Employment Coordinator to meet Reuben at his home, for an initial assessment of his needs.
From the onset it was clear that Reuben needed expertise from a number of Action teams.
He was in arrears with his council tax and rent and so our Welfare Rights Officer worked with Reuben to apply for Tax Credits and other additional benefits to which he was entitled.
He wasn’t properly registered as self-employed and was struggling at work due to his visual impairment. Our Employment team advised Reuben on how to maintain his self employed status and keep proper accounts. They also explained the various options available to support him in his job, including the Access to Work Scheme.
Actions unique way of working with visually impaired people meant that he received all the support he needed from a single source.
