Ivan's story

Nine years ago Ivan, who lives in Devon, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, his vision became worse two years ago and he was registered blind.

When I was diagnosed it came as a huge shock but my employers were great and really helpful. Unfortunately, I was made redundant and soon after my vision took a turn for the worse. I was eventually registered blind.

At the time I was working for a college, as an IT Trainer. Following redundancy I realised how difficult it would be to find employment due to my visual impairment. I attended more than 20 interviews but was turned down each time; it became very disheartening.

My social worker told me about Action for Blind People and last year I contacted them and spoke to Steve, who works with the Exeter Action Team, who visited me at my home. We started with a very informal chat about my career aspirations. A few words stuck in my mind; you are employable. This was a great confidence boost during a low period in my life.

Steve helped me with my search for employment. I received support with writing my CV, completing application forms, interview techniques and travel to and from interviews.

At the same time as trying to find a new job, due to my redundancy, my wife and I faced eviction from our rented property. Action helped us find alternative suitable accommodation. Lynne from Action guided us through our benefits applications to ensure we claimed everything we were entitled to.

I finally secured the job I really wanted as an employment trainer, helping 16 to 18 year olds to gain sustainable employment. Using the technology at work can be quite a challenge but Shenagh, one of Action’s Assistive Technology Coordinators provided expert advice on aids available which could help me do my job. She also came to my place of work to determine which equipment was needed. With her support I was able to submit a claim to Access to Work and received funding for the equipment, which was great.

Action has given me the confidence and motivation to continue. When I have days where I feel down, Action is always there to pick me up.
