Tips on producing printed material for visually impaired people

All visually impaired people have different requirements when it comes to the production of printed materials, but if you take note of the following when producing documents for visually impaired people it will help in their accessibility:

  • All documents should be produced in a minimum of 14 size font.
  • The point size for large print is 16-22.
  • Always use a sans serif font.
  • Arial, Helevetica and Futura fonts are easier to read.
  • The use of handwriting requires felt tip pens, thicker lines and larger writing.
  • Avoid upper casing entire words or sentences as capital letters give less variation and are therefore more difficult to read quickly.
  • Titles should be written in both upper and lower case.
  • Use short paragraphs where possible as larger blocks of text can be difficult for visually impaired people to read.
  • The text should always be aligned from the left margin.
  • It is preferable to use paper with a matt finish as paper with a glossy finish can produce a glare.
