The type of business you wish to start up may determine the business skills you will initially need. For example, some business will require you to operate a computer, others may require specialist certificates such as, health and safety.
Our self employment service can support you to identify the skills you already have and training you may need. You may find that you already have some business skills from your previous employment, hobbies or activities; for example marketing, bookkeeping or IT.
You may need the following advice or training before starting up in business;

- How to conduct market research.
- Forming and naming the business.
- Finance, bookkeeping and taxation.
- PAYE and employing staff.
- Health, safety and premises.

- Industry specific training courses, such as food hygiene.
Where can I get this training?
If these courses are available in your area, our service can support you to access them. Courses are generally run throughout the year and can be accessed free or for a fee from numerous sources, such as Business Link, local enterprise agencies, local council enterprise centres and HM Revenue & Customs.
