User participation
At Action we believe that the people using our services should be involved with what we do. It's the best way for us to be sure that the services we provide, or that we recommend, are what people want and need.
Service user participation helps us to develop by gaining a better understanding of the issues that visually impaired people face and to represent them accordingly.
How can I get involved?
There are several different ways - you can choose whichever works best for you.
Join a service user participation group
You will meet with staff from our teams to discuss and influence the development of local services, as well as getting involved in national projects, campaigns and events. Joining a group is also a good way to find out more about your local community. You can find out about the latest useful gadgets, help improve public services (e.g. transport) and make a difference to the lives of other people with sight loss.
Groups also exist to work with our Hotels and in 2011 we plan to start groups for teenagers and young people.
Join UP Central
You can register with our website and then join UP Central. You will find out when your nearest meeting is and can get involved with a user participation network.
Or join our virtual group and help us online
In becoming a member you will be contacted by email approximately once a month and asked to have a look at something we’re working on and tell us what you think. You will be able to do this from your own computer so there is no need to do any travelling and the tasks should take no more than 30 minutes per month of your time.
Complete a survey or questionnaire
If you do not have the time to attend regular group meetings, this might be the ideal way to participate. Surveys will be provided in the format that you require.
Help us recruit the right staff
It is our policy to have a service user on staff recruitment panels. As well as helping us to secure the right staff, this is a great opportunity to gain an understanding of recruitment from the point of view of the employer. This could be particularly helpful if you are looking for work.
Other ways to get involved
We are always looking for people to become Action representatives for events or to help us with networking and awareness raising. If you are used to public speaking, have writing skills or have experience of working in groups or committees, we would like to hear from you.
Speak to someone
If you need advice and would like to speak to someone then please contact your local Action team and they will put you in touch with an advisor. You can also contact us through the RNIB Helpline on 0303 123 9999 and ask to be referred to your local Action team.
