Young people
Action for Blind People have developed a service specifically for young people aged 14 – 25, we call it ‘Transitions’.
Transitions service for young people
Between the ages of 14-25 you will probably complete more of life’s 'journeys' than at any other time of your life; moving from school to college or from college to university, starting your first job or work experience, taking charge of your money, or leaving home for the first time, for example.
From time to time you may feel that some support and advice would be useful, so Action has a team of coordinators who offer guidance to young people aged between 14 and 25, who have sight loss, and their families.
At these significant points in your life, transitions coordinators are there to guide you through any challenges and unforeseen barriers to ensure you can get the most out of opportunities and succeed in your personal choices.
Our service
There are four main areas in which you can receive guidance, support and advice:
- Education.
- Employment.
- Social and independence.
- Leisure opportunities.

Most importantly it is you that plays a central part in the work that we carry out.
Your thoughts and opinions are very important to us, to ensure we are offering you what you want. For this reason your guidance and feedback is very much welcomed, to shape your service and make sure it is meeting your needs.
Activities
There are a range of trips and events organised including an invite to attend the ‘Haggeye Project’ as a delegate at their two-day mini-conference in Edinburgh in March or an Activity Weekend in the Peak District.
Field Studies
Field Studies enable visually impaired young people to learn about the environment, make new friends, experience a break away from home and enjoy the outdoors. All meals, accommodation and activities are provided. Field Studies are run by Action for Blind People and the Field Studies Council (FSC).
We also arrange theatre trips with an audio description, skiing lessons on a dry slope or indoor wall climbing, so plenty to choose from.
For more information on these and the many other events on offer, visit our activity calendar.
