Northamptonshire children and families project

We work with Northamptonshire Association for the Blind on a children and families project. The project enables children and young people with a visual impairment to realise their aspirations, achieve their maximum potential and reach their goals. Our vision is a world where children who are blind and partially sighted have an equal say and equal provision to leisure activities and services in Northamptonshire.

Action for Blind People provides practical advice and guidance to families about what leisure services, activities and support are available in Northamptonshire. We offer expert one-to-one help either in the home or over the phone from the moment a child is diagnosed, through each key stage of their development up until the age of 19.

Action’s service includes:

  • Family support and information - immediate and ongoing specialist ‘one-stop’ emotional support.
  • Events for families and young people - we organise ‘taster days’ with local clubs and providers within a supported inclusive environment.
  • Advocacy support - expert advice and representation from both local and national organisations.
  • Family weekends/ vacation schemes for young people - we organise national family weekends and activities and also run vacation schemes.
  • Need help and advice? - if we don’t have the answer immediately, we will happily research on your behalf.
  • Be involved in a project which is parent led - working together to help decide the future of services and activities in Northamptonshire.
  • Family support groups - where parents decide on the issues that are most relevant for them.
  • Talk to other parents online - share experiences through RNIB's Parents' Place.

"The scheme has shown me that I can achieve and take part in activities that require sight and that having limited sight should never be a reason for me not to join in!" Vacation Scheme participant.
