Denis Deasy's blog

Hi, I am Denis Deasy and I work in the ICT team at Action. I was born with Cataracts in both eyes – I am partially sighted in my right eye. The simplest way to explain what I can see is, I can read the top line of an Eye chart at 6 meters (it used to be 20 feet), and I have good central vision but no peripheral sight – so I turn my head a lot to see. I lost all sight in my left eye when I was six or seven years old.
At work I have a computer with a 17” screen and I use screen magnification software to magnify everything on my computer screen, I am using it now as I type this blog. This means I only see a faction of the screen that a fully sighted person sees, but all the text and graphics are still there, you just don’t see them at once. So one of the best features of screen magnification software is the fact that the cursor and the mouse pointer are automatically tracked / followed on screen. It also helps being a touch typist – I had to give up cookery at school to learn touch typing – so my cookery has suffered.
Although I work in IT, this is not going to be a computer / techy blog. I will be writing about various things over the coming months, for example using public transport and mobile phones.

Hi Mandy and Yve,
The easiest way to find out about the latest assistive technology available is to call our Freephone Helpline on 0800 915 4666.
They will be able to refer you to one of our Action Teams who have specialist assistive technology coordinators. Or they will advise you themselves as to the best way forward regarding equipment and grants or any other questions you may have.
And they're lovely!

Really interesting to read your blog - I'm trying to find out about the latest IT equipment available for a member of my family recently becoming severely visually impaired - how do I find out and is there any grants available?
