Glaucoma

One of the most common eye problems in the UK and a major cause of sight loss, glaucoma can be prevented by early detection and treatment.

When someone has glaucoma, their vision may become patchy or they may lose the sight from the sides of their eyes leading to what is known as tunnel vision. Glaucoma is caused by an increase in the pressure of the fluid inside the eye, damaging the optic nerve.

If glaucoma is detected in the early stages, it can be treated and controlled - often through using special eye drops. This condition can be hereditary but will not necessarily affect each generation in turn. If members of your family suffer from glaucoma, you can get free eye tests every two years after the age of 40, to detect the condition.
